Organizational Mission and Description

As You Sow is dedicated to ensuring that corporations act responsibly and in the long-term best interests of the environment and the human condition.  To achieve this, As You Sow:

· Engages corporations through direct dialogue and shareholder advocacy;

· Refines economic arguments to move corporations and financial markets toward environmentally and socially responsible practices;

· Enforces environmental, consumer protection and related laws;

 
As You Sow is located in the financial district of downtown San Francisco, and was founded in 1992. As You Sow has grown into two primary programs: The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Program utilizes shareholder advocacy to encourage corporations to operate in an environmentally responsible and socially just manner, and the Environmental Enforcement (EE) Program pursues litigation to bring companies doing business in California into compliance with the state's Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act. As You Sow is currently comprised of seven staff members and an all-volunteer Board of Directors. 

 
Job Description

This position will support the Anti-Slavery Campaign, which is the main project inside the Human Rights Program. The associate will be responsible for the daily activities of the campaign, whose goal is to eradicate slave labor from corporate supply chains. This is achieved by engaging corporations to insist on responsible practices within their own supply chains, using their economic influence to encourage local authorities to enforce labor and human rights laws, and engaging international institutions to play a key role. Initial industries of focus are on the cotton sector in Central Asia, and the extractives industry in Africa. This work is done in collaboration with socially responsible investment groups, human rights organizations and the business community; there will be significant interaction with these colleagues. The position reports into the CSR Associate Director for the Human Rights Program.

 

Responsibilities:

· Assist in building a multi-stakeholder coalition of concerned investors, human rights activists, industry associations and companies to support our issues.

· Collection of research in key industry areas to support ongoing dialogues with major corporations, industry associations, government officials, and trade press.

· Writing research memos and reports for newsletters, publication opportunities, funder proposals and reports, and board reports.

· Organization of and periodic updates to the coalition website, As You Sow website and interaction with social networks and online publicity/stories.

· Preparation of educational and marketing materials, fact sheets and press releases

· Communication to the coalition working groups, and organization of conference calls, webinars and periodic in-person meetings.

· Tracking of company and investor actions, activities on the ground, program-specific legislative engagement, opportunities to engage international institutions, and internal achievements.

· Support for international conferences and trade shows.

· Research new campaign ideas

 Additional Responsibilities:

· Educate and seek the support of major institutional and individual investors.

· Assist in fund-raising efforts by contributing to development of grant proposals and reports.

 

Qualifications

· Personal commitment to progressive social and environmental change.

· Strong interpersonal and phone skills, and ability to communicate with a wide range of stakeholders.

· Ability to assist senior staff in translating complicated social issues into mainstream financial arguments.

· Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent job experience.

· Demonstrated skill in research and report writing, preferably with strong quantitative skills.

· Computer proficiency with Word, Excel, databases, web content management, online interfaces and social networking platforms (web design a plus).

· Familiarity with social and environmental challenges of Uzbekistan or Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the cotton or extractives industries a plus.

· Enthusiastic, detail-oriented, assertive, able to think critically and enjoys identifying new opportunities.

· Self-motivated, flexible and possesses a high level of personal integrity.

· Excellent organizational skills -- able to multi-task, establish priorities, meet   deadlines, and successfully manage numerous projects simultaneously.

· Takes direction well, learns quickly.
