Background:

General Electric can trace its roots to the founding of the Edison Electric Light Company in 1878. By 1890, Edison had organized his various businesses into the Edison General Electric Company. The Thomson-Houston Company and the various companies that had merged to form it were led by Charles A. Coffin. In 1892, these two major companies combined to form the General Electric Company.

Today, GE is made up of six businesses, each of which includes a number of units.

 

  • GE Commercial Finance provides loans, operating leases, financing programs, commercial insurance, and an array of other products and services aimed at enabling business worldwide to grow.
  • GE Healthcare is a leader in the development of a new paradigm of patient care dedicated to detecting disease earlier and helping physicians tailor treatment for individual patients.
  • GE Industrial provides a broad range of products and services throughout the world, including appliances and lighting; plastics and silicones products; and equipment services.
  • GE Infrastructure is one of the world's leading providers of fundamental technologies to developing countries, including aviation, energy, oil and gas, rail and water process technologies.
  • GE Money, formerly known as GE Consumer Finance, is a leading provider of credit services to consumers, retailers and automotive dealers around the world.
  • NBC Universal is one of the world's leading media and entertainment companies in the development, production and marketing of entertainment, news and information to a global audience.

 

 

Jeffrey R. Immelt, Chairman of the Board and CEO

Jeffrey R. Immelt, 50, is Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of GE. Mr. Immelt, the 9th Chairman in GE's 128-year history, was appointed to this post on September 7, 2001. Previously, Mr. Immelt served as President and Chairman-elect of GE starting in November 2000.

He began his GE career in 1982. Over the last 24 years, Mr. Immelt has held a series of global leadership roles in GE's Plastics, Appliance, and Medical businesses. He became an Officer of GE in 1989, and joined the GE Capital Board in 1997.

In 2005 and 2006, Barron’s named Mr. Immelt one of the World’s Best CEO’s. Under his leadership, GE has been named “America’s Most Admired Company” in a poll conducted by FORTUNE magazine and the world's most respected company in polls conducted by Barron's and the Financial Times.

He serves as Chairman of The Business Council and is on the board of three non-profit organizations: Catalyst, devoted to advancing women in business; and Robin Hood, focused on addressing poverty in New York City; and the New York Federal Reserve Bank.

Mr. Immelt holds a B.A. degree in applied mathematics from Dartmouth College (1978) and an M.B.A. from Harvard University (1982).
